Timeline
1920
Founded by Md. Hanif, a wrestler by inclination, as a raw hide and skin trading center in Bihar. A state in the Eastern Part of India.
1930
Second trading center opened.
1940
Third trading center opened.
1958
Maqubul Alam, son of Md. Hanif, joins his father’s business.
1960
Commences export of Dry Salted Goat Skins to various European countries
1967
Shifts focus to Calcutta in view of the ports city’s location and infra- structural advantages. Diversifies product lines to include Wet Blue, Crust and Finished Leathers.
1970
Alam Tannery starts production at its own facility exporting finished leathers to East and West Europe.
1980
Second tannery setup.
1982
Mahmud Alam the eldest of the next generation, joins the company.
1983
First Leather Goods unit set up to start export of Bags and Wallets
1986
Afroz Alam joins the group.
1987
Cut and Sew unit set up for Export of leather Sofa and chair covers.
1991
Aftab Alam joins business.
1993
Alexim Bags and Apparels set up to take over the Leather Goods division of Alam Tannery
1996
Second Cut & Sew unit set up.
1997
Avantage Services (P) Ltd. set up for the logistical and forwarding needs of the Alam Group and its business Associates.
2000
A plot of 18.600 sq.mtrs. acquired to set up a fully modern Tannery at the integrated Calcutta Leather Complex, an industrial area devoted to the leather trade.
2003
Shadab Alam the youngest of the four sons join the business.
2005
Alexim amalgamated into Alam Tannery
First Phase of New Tannery, which will have a capacity of 2.5 Million sqft per month when complete, inaugurated on the 1st of July
2006
Finishing Department of Tannery Completed
2011
First Retail Store launched in Kolkata.
2012
Production of Upholstery under the Brand Buffalo label of the Group completes 25 successful years.
2015
Alamenti Furniture Pvt ltd formed to sell Sofas and other seating systems Domestically
